Venice Film Festival to Honor Daniels, Labaki, and Abramovic with Liberatum Pioneer Awards
Filmmakers Lee Daniels and Nadine Labaki, along with performance artist Marina Abramovic, will receive Liberatum Pioneer Awards at a ceremony during the Venice Film Festival. The awards mark the 25th anniversary of Pablo Ganguli's Liberatum cultural diplomacy organization. The exclusive announcement highlights the trio's contributions to art and cinema.
The honors will be bestowed during the inaugural Liberatum Art & Cinema program, which coincides with the cultural organization's 25th anniversary. The ceremony is scheduled for September 6 and 7 in Venice, with Liberatum citing the trio's role in challenging conventions and expanding artistic boundaries.
Abramovic's recognition follows her historic solo exhibition at the Gallerie dell'Accademia, where she is the first living female artist featured in over two centuries. Previous Pioneer Award recipients include Angela Bassett and Ellen Burstyn, the latter honored at Venice in 2024.
This recognition could amplify the visibility of marginalized narratives in mainstream cinema, potentially encouraging studios to fund similarly bold projects. For the art world, Abramovic's accolade may further legitimize performance art as a serious discipline. The Venice platform could also foster greater cross-cultural dialogue, allowing international audiences to engage with Middle Eastern and Black American experiences through a lens of artistic merit rather than commercial viability.
