Custom Steam Machine Faceplates Crafted from Michelangelo's Marble
A Reddit user has created Steam Machine faceplates using the same type of Carrara marble that Michelangelo used for his sculptures. The resulting panels are described as visually stunning. The creator has indicated that these marble faceplates may be made available for purchase.
The creator, /u/GinoWT, crafted three distinct panels using Statuario, Sahara Noir, and Roman Travertine. The Statuario marble originates from the same quarry basin Michelangelo worked from. To ensure durability and manage weight, each 5-6mm stone slab is bonded onto a 3D-printed base.
A small production run is being prepared, with a website collecting emails for pricing and shipping details. Regarding performance, the creator reports daily use without issues and intends to conduct a formal stress test comparing the marble panel against the standard one.
This customization trend could elevate the Steam Machine from a standard gaming PC to a luxury art object, potentially influencing how enthusiasts perceive hardware modding. It may also inspire other artisans to experiment with premium materials, though high costs and potential thermal trade-offs could limit widespread adoption, keeping it a niche but culturally significant hobby for collectors and PC builders.
