Saber Interactive to Add AI Label to Rideshare Stimulator on Steam After Public Criticism
Saber Interactive, the publisher of Rideshare Stimulator, has confirmed it will add an AI-generated content label to the game's Steam page after public backlash. The decision follows controversy over the use of AI in the game.
Karch detailed that the experimental Free Ride mode, which generates an infinite number of characters, required hiring two additional writers and multiple coders to work with AI tools, resulting in higher net costs than simply omitting the feature. He framed this as an effort to master emerging tools to enhance player experiences, while also noting Saber's ownership of the Digic cinematics studio as evidence against replacing human talent.
The dispute stems from former writer Stella Sacco's assertion that she was removed from the project in 2023 to be replaced by ChatGPT, a claim Karch denies. Steam's existing policy mandates disclosure for visible in-game AI, but not background tools, which fueled the forum complaints demanding a label.
This controversy could influence industry standards for AI transparency, as players may increasingly demand clear labeling of generative content, potentially pressuring platforms like Steam to tighten disclosure policies. For developers, the public spat might create a chilling effect on adopting AI tools, or conversely, normalize their usage if framed as an enhancement. The CEO's dismissive response could also shape consumer trust in publishers, affecting purchasing decisions based on perceived ethical stances.
