California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Skydance CEO David Ellison are driving a wedge between Hollywood labor unions over how to approach the antitrust battle against a proposed merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. The proposed $111 billion merger's trial date of March 2027 has prompted the Directors Guild and IATSE to urge a settlement or faster proceedings, citing severe job losses. IATSE hours have dropped nearly 36% since 2022, while DGA employment fell 40% over the same period, with leaders warning that uncertainty around Warner Bros. Discovery is already shrinking work.
In contrast, the Writers Guild supports the attorneys general's lawsuit and filed its own, as writing work is less tied to local physical production and outsourcing. SAG-AFTRA backs regulators but seeks enforceable safeguards, while the Teamsters demand clearer workforce commitments from Paramount Skydance, reflecting differing vulnerabilities to production fluctuations.
The labor split could delay or complicate the merger's resolution, as divergent union strategies may weaken a unified front against the deal. Workers in physical production roles could face prolonged uncertainty if the trial drags on, while writers may prioritize long-term market structure.
