GLP-1 Use Before Bariatric Surgery Does Not Affect Postoperative Weight Loss
A retrospective study of 383 patients found that those who used GLP-1 medications prior to bariatric surgery achieved similar weight loss one year after surgery compared to those who did not. The retrospective analysis drew from a single academic center's records between 2022 and 2024, encompassing 383 adults with an average starting BMI near 44. The cohort was predominantly female, and most procedures were sleeve gastrectomies. Notably, preoperative GLP-1 users were more likely to have diabetes and less likely to smoke than their counterparts.
The medications used spanned several agents, with semaglutide being the most common, though most patients were not on maximum doses. The lead researcher acknowledged that other recent investigations have produced conflicting results, highlighting the need for larger, prospective trials to determine optimal sequencing of drug and surgical therapies.
This finding could reassure patients and clinicians that combining medication with surgery is not counterproductive, potentially easing fears about diminished surgical returns.
