Android app turns your phone into a Tor proxy to combat censorship
A new Android app called Snowflake Volunteer allows users to turn their phones into Tor proxies, helping people in censored regions communicate freely. The application emerged from a collaborative effort involving Bloco, the Tor Network, and the Guardian Project. It builds upon the Tor Project's earlier Snowflake initiative, which launched in 2019, adapting that concept for mobile use.
The tool is intended for users in unrestricted regions who wish to assist others. It disguises proxy traffic as video calls using WebRTC, and its constantly shifting, short-lived connections make it resilient against blocking attempts, as traffic can seamlessly switch to alternate proxies. Increased participation strengthens this dynamic network.
