Mets' Jefry Yan brings viral strikeout celebrations to MLB
Jefry Yan, famous for his exuberant strikeout celebrations, has joined the major leagues. His videos have gone viral, and he has been increasing his strikeout numbers in recent years. He brings his unique flair to the Mets.
Yan's route to the majors was circuitous. Signed at 16, he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016, was released, and spent five years away from professional pitching while working construction and delivery jobs in Arizona. He returned to affiliated ball with the Marlins in 2021, where his distinctive leaping celebrations began in Double A.
Before joining the Mets as a minor-league free agent, he pitched in Japan for the Seibu Lions and in the Rockies system. At 29, he posted a 3.24 ERA with 77 strikeouts across 41 2/3 innings for Binghamton and Syracuse, striking out over half the batters he faced at Triple-A.
Yan's exuberant style could energize a struggling Mets clubhouse and entertain fans, potentially shifting norms around on-field emotion. His unique journey may inspire players facing long odds, while his celebrations could also spark debates about sportsmanship, as seen with the opposing manager's ejection and fan boos. This could influence how teams evaluate character and entertainment value in roster decisions.
