Global Shipping Groups Oppose Proposed Tolls in Strait of Hormuz
Eight major shipping organizations have signed a letter opposing the introduction of tolls in the Strait of Hormuz. They warn that such fees would disrupt global trade and harm livelihoods worldwide. The letter highlights the critical waterway's importance to international shipping.
The letter, addressed to the UN and the International Maritime Organization, was endorsed by eight major industry bodies, including the World Shipping Council and the International Chamber of Shipping. They contend that mandatory transit fees would breach established legal norms for international straits and create a harmful precedent.
Trade analyst Deborah Elms noted that Asian economies, the primary buyers of Gulf energy, could face sharp increases in diesel, fertilizer, and plastic costs. The IMO's chief has previously asserted that nations lack the legal right to levy such charges, and Iran has already operated a de facto toll system in the waterway.
The proposed tolls could raise costs across global supply chains, with energy-dependent Asian markets facing the most immediate strain. This may translate into higher consumer prices for fuel, fertilizers, and plastics, potentially worsening inflationary pressures. Smaller, trade-reliant economies could experience disproportionate economic hardship. Additionally, establishing such a precedent might encourage similar fees at other maritime chokepoints, potentially destabilizing long-term navigation rights and fostering geopolitical tensions.
