Melania Trump Steps Back Into Spotlight to Promote Foster Care Scholarships

During a White House Rose Garden event on Thursday, first lady Melania Trump made her first major public appearance since mid-July, joking that she had been missed. She announced a $2 million scholarship fund for students from foster care, to be distributed through Indiana and Purdue universities, in partnership with Fox Corporation and IndyCar. The initiative continues her 'Fostering the Future' program, which she has maintained since 2021.

The Rose Garden event marked a rare public engagement for the first lady, who has largely remained out of view during her husband's second term. Before the inauguration, she had acknowledged the first transition was difficult but said this time she had everything prepared, noting she had already selected furniture and planned to split time between Washington, New York, and Palm Beach.

The scholarship program extends her "Fostering the Future" initiative, which she has sustained since 2021. The $2 million fund will support students from foster care attending Indiana University or Purdue University, with the announcement timed to coincide with IndyCar's upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix. In her remarks, she emphasized that foster youth possess capabilities equal to any other students.
