Army Secretary Plans Departure by Late 2026 After Clashes With Pentagon Chief
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll intends to leave his post around the end of 2026, according to sources familiar with the matter, following a prolonged dispute with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Driscoll, confirmed in February 2025, has focused on improving troop living conditions, modernizing equipment, and integrating commercial tech from Ukraine. His exit comes amid tensions over influence and after Hegseth ousted the Army chief of staff earlier this year.
Driscoll’s tenure, beginning with Senate confirmation in February 2025, has been marked by initiatives to overhaul Army living standards, modernize gear, and apply lessons from Ukraine’s drone-heavy combat. He worked closely with Gen. Randy George, who was dismissed by Hegseth in April, and later backed the Army Transformation Initiative targeting warfighting capabilities, force structure, and obsolete programs. Driscoll also took a lead role in Ukraine negotiations, a move that heightened friction with Hegseth. His planned exit aligns with his stated view that 23–24 months is the typical service length for an Army secretary under this administration.
