Ford Names New Affordable Electric Pickup 'Fathom' with $28,350 Starting Price
Ford has announced that its upcoming affordable electric pickup truck will be called the Fathom, with a base price of $28,350. Deliveries are expected to begin later next year. The vehicle aims to compete in the growing market for budget-friendly electric trucks.
Ford's initial attempt to electrify its F-150 underperformed, prompting a California-based internal team to design a clean-sheet EV platform. This new architecture uses a zonal electronic layout, replacing numerous discrete control units with a few powerful computers to reduce wiring complexity.
The Fathom features a footprint similar to the Maverick but offers RAV4-level cabin space, bidirectional charging, and optional hands-free driving assistance. Priced at $28,350 plus delivery, it undercuts many rivals while remaining above the ultra-basic Slate Auto Blank Slate, which lacks factory-installed rear seats and power windows.
The Fathom's pricing could significantly broaden the appeal of electric trucks beyond early adopters, potentially accelerating the transition to EVs among middle-income households and small businesses that need practical, four-door utility. Its competitive price point may pressure other automakers to lower costs or add features, while the focus on simplified manufacturing could influence future vehicle designs.
