US military renews controversial maritime drug interdiction with deadly strike in Pacific

The US Southern Command conducted a lethal strike on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the eastern Pacific on 23 August, killing two people. This was the first such operation in over two months, following a pause after earthquakes in Venezuela. The military has not provided evidence that the vessel carried drugs, and the campaign has now killed 223 people in 67 strikes over nearly a year.
