Australian Chart Body Becomes First to Block Fully AI-Made Songs

The Australian Recording Industry Association will exclude recordings created entirely by generative AI from its official charts, starting with the chart dated August 31. Tracks that use AI as a supporting tool remain eligible, provided they are substantially human-made and show no signs of chart manipulation. The policy aligns with a global AI labeling standard announced in July and marks the first time a national chart organization has adopted such rules with a set implementation date.

The new ARIA code applies the global AI labeling framework introduced July 10 by IFPI and major labels, distinguishing fully AI-generated recordings from AI-assisted ones. Enforcement powers include removing ineligible tracks from charts, adjusting positions, withdrawing accreditations, revoking No. 1 Awards, and barring tracks from ARIA Awards, with an updated disputes process for artists.

The policy responds to recent AI acts like Breaking Rust, which topped Billboard's Country Digital Song Sales chart in 2025, and IngaRose, which reached No. 1 on iTunes in April 2026. Neither case involved detected streaming fraud, but both highlighted the absence of chart rules governing AI output. ARIA says it will review the code as technology evolves.
