The PGA Tour will introduce a new playoff format starting in 2028, featuring a Championship Series Finale and a two-week TOUR Championship. The top 90 players on the points list will compete in a traditional stroke-play event, with the top 32 advancing to a match-play bracket. The new format replaces the FedEx Cup’s three-event, stroke-play elimination, which currently trims fields from 70 to 50 to 30. Under the 2028 plan, the top 90 points earners open with a 72-hole finale, then 32 advance to group match play, with undefeated players meeting in a final-day title match. The change follows a broader 2028 schedule split into a 15-event Championship Series (minimum $20 million purses) and a 20-event Challenger Series for emerging talent (minimum $4 million purses). Tiger Woods praised the move, and dates and venues are set for announcement in February 2027.
