Sixth-Round Pick Davis Shines in Extended Preseason Debut
Rookie offensive lineman J.C. Davis played all 81 snaps in the Giants' 26-3 preseason win over the Dolphins, allowing no pressures and earning high grades from Pro Football Focus. The former Illinois standout credited his preparation for the hot conditions. His performance has strengthened his case for a spot on the 53-man roster.
Davis's path to the Giants' roster has been unconventional. After starring at New Mexico, he transferred to Illinois, where he earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors and helped the Fighting Illini compile a 19-7 record across the 2024 and 2025 seasons. At 6-foot-2 and 322 pounds, he waited three days before hearing his name called in the draft's sixth round.
The rookie's performance against Miami came in sweltering conditions he compared to a prior game in New Mexico. Beyond his clean pass-blocking sheet, Davis logged every offensive snap, demonstrating the conditioning and durability the coaching staff wanted to evaluate. He has also been absorbing techniques from left tackle Andrew Thomas, though Davis acknowledges some of Thomas's movements are unique to the veteran.
Davis's emergence could reshape the Giants' roster decisions as final cuts approach, potentially influencing the team's depth chart and salary cap flexibility. His strong preseason may also signal a broader shift in how late-round offensive linemen are evaluated across the league, with teams possibly placing greater emphasis on college production and versatility. For fans, a homegrown success story offers optimism during a rebuilding phase, though preseason performance remains an imperfect predictor of regular-season reliability.
