Golden eagle fledglings delay departure despite early flying proficiency

GPS tracking of 92 young golden eagles in the Alps over six years showed they can fly as skillfully as adults within months of fledging, yet many remain in their parents' territory for nearly a year. The study, published in Royal Society Open Science, indicates that flying ability is not the trigger for leaving. Being able to survive independently and actually taking that step are clearly different things.
