Suzuki's First Electric Kei Car Promises 310 km Range
Suzuki has introduced the e SKY, its inaugural battery-electric kei car, with a reference driving range of 310 kilometers. The vehicle retains the compact dimensions of the earlier concept and uses a 26 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. It is scheduled to go on sale in Japan during autumn 2026, with pricing and final specifications yet to be announced.
The e SKY’s 310-km reference range is achieved with a modest 26 kWh pack, aided by a curb weight near 1,030 kg—light for an EV. Its 97 Wh/km consumption target reflects Suzuki’s focus on efficiency over capacity, while the LFP chemistry prioritizes durability and lower material costs. The HEARTECT-e platform integrates the motor, inverter, and gears into a single e-Axle, with the battery mounted under the floor. Aerodynamic work on the underbody helps offset the tall, boxy kei-car shape, and the 2,460-mm wheelbase preserves the class’s compact footprint.
Suzuki’s “Easy to Switch” design philosophy targets daily urban duties—commuting, school runs, shopping—rather than highway travel. The prototype’s dimensions (3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide, 1,625 mm high) match the 2025 concept, but the range estimate has grown from 270 km to 310 km, showing engineering gains without enlarging the body. Final pricing and WLTC-certified figures remain pending.
This launch could reshape Japan’s kei-car market, where buyers prioritize affordability and practicality. If priced competitively, the e SKY may accelerate EV adoption among households that previously saw electric vehicles as too large or costly. Its small battery and low weight could also influence urban fleet operators and delivery services, though limited range may deter rural users. The model’s success might pressure rivals like Daihatsu and Honda to fast-track their own kei EVs, potentially lowering entry barriers for first-time EV buyers across the country.
