Small grocers take legal action against NYC mayor's municipal store proposal

A coalition of small supermarket owners in New York City has filed two lawsuits against Mayor Zohran Mamdani, challenging his proposal to open five municipally owned grocery stores. The group argues the stores, which would sell goods at 30% below typical retail prices, would drive smaller immigrant- and minority-owned businesses out of business. The city plans to open the first store in the Bronx in 2027.
