Awards Columnist Kyle Buchanan Departs NYT for New Acast Podcast
Kyle Buchanan has left The New York Times after eight years as a pop culture reporter and awards columnist. He will launch 'The Kyle Buchanan Show' with Acast, a twice-weekly video podcast debuting in mid-October. The show will feature panel discussions and one-on-one interviews with industry figures.
Buchanan spent eight years at The New York Times, where his “The Projectionist” column became a key read during awards season. His reporting included high-profile celebrity profiles and a bestselling oral history of *Mad Max: Fury Road*, built from over 130 interviews. Before joining the Times, he was a senior editor at New York Magazine’s Vulture, and in 2021 he was named journalist of the year by the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards.
His new twice-weekly Acast-backed show will split between group panels on Tuesdays and solo interviews on Fridays, with video available on Apple Podcasts. Acast, which also distributes shows like *Giggly Squad* and *The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers*, will handle advertising and partnerships. The debut is slated for mid-October, following news first reported by Variety.
This move reflects a broader shift of established print journalists toward independent, podcast-driven media, where direct audience relationships and ad revenue can outweigh institutional backing. Buchanan’s industry access and awards expertise may draw both Hollywood insiders seeking credible analysis and general listeners tired of superficial coverage. The show could influence how awards-season narratives are shaped, potentially offering a more candid, conversational alternative to traditional trade reporting—though its long-term impact will depend on sustaining A-list participation and audience trust.
