Sony's Xperia 10 VIII offers minor upgrades at a higher price
The Xperia 10 VIII retains the same 6.1-inch OLED display, Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chip, and camera setup as its predecessor, but adds a brighter screen and louder speakers. It also includes a quick-access payment shortcut via double-tapping the power button. The phone costs £549 in the UK, £150 more than last year's model.
The Xperia 10 VIII keeps the identical 6.1-inch OLED panel, Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor, 8GB RAM, and 5,000mAh battery found in its predecessor. Its 50MP main camera, 13MP ultrawide, and 8MP front shooter remain untouched, making this a largely iterative release. The notable physical changes are limited to a 50 percent brighter display, 15 percent louder speakers, and a translucent rear panel offered in Frozen White, Frosted Grey, or Misty Lilac.
Sony no longer sells Xperia phones in the US, so this launch targets other markets like the UK. The £549 price tag represents a £150 jump over last year's model, with availability slated for September. The double-tap power button payment shortcut is the only genuinely new functional addition.
This price increase on a minimally upgraded midrange phone could signal shifting cost pressures in the smartphone supply chain, potentially affecting budget-conscious consumers who rely on affordable devices. Buyers may feel compelled to hold onto older phones longer or seek alternatives from competing brands. The lack of meaningful innovation could also influence purchasing decisions, as consumers weigh whether incremental features justify significantly higher costs in an already saturated market.
