Waymo targets Munich for robotaxi service by 2027

Waymo's Munich rollout follows the same staged approach used across its 11 existing robotaxi cities. Germany's 2021 legislation made it the first EU nation to establish a legal framework for Level 4 autonomy, which requires no human intervention within defined conditions.
The German market already hosts several autonomous vehicle testers, including Mobileye and Volkswagen, though most hold Level 3 permits requiring driver oversight. Beyond Germany, London is emerging as another robotaxi battleground, with Waymo planning a 2026 launch there against Wayve, Uber, and Baidu, which is testing in partnership with Lyft and Freenow.
Waymo's Munich expansion could reshape urban mobility in German cities, potentially offering residents a new transportation option that may reduce reliance on private car ownership.
