Hilary leaves Bel-Air for New York in new Peacock spin-off series
Peacock has ordered a spin-off of its drama Bel-Air centered on Hilary, Will's influencer cousin, played by Coco Jones. The character relocates to New York after receiving a job offer from a celebrity chef, continuing the story from the original Fresh Prince finale. Tracy Oliver, known for Harlem and Girls Trip, will serve as creator.
The spin-off marks the first extension of the Fresh Prince universe, following Bel-Air’s four-season run that concluded in November. Coco Jones reprises her role as Hilary, who relocates to New York after a job offer from chef Yvonne Durand. The narrative cleverly mirrors the original sitcom’s finale, where Hilary also departed for New York, though Bel-Air had her running a Beverly Hills cafe instead.
Creator Tracy Oliver brings a strong streaming pedigree, having developed Harlem and First Wives Club. Her film credits include the landmark comedy Girls Trip, which made her the first Black woman to write a $100 million-grossing film. A long-discussed sequel, reportedly set in Ghana, remains unproduced, though Oliver confirmed plans in 2023.
This spin-off could reinforce Peacock’s investment in expanding established IP, potentially drawing both nostalgic Fresh Prince fans and newer Bel-Air viewers. By centering on Hilary’s influencer persona and a New York setting, the show may explore themes of ambition and reinvention, resonating with audiences interested in career-driven narratives. Its success could signal demand for more character-focused extensions of reboots, though it also risks diluting the original’s dramatic tone if not handled carefully.
