Issa Rae to create and executive produce HBO boxing comedy about male friendship
Issa Rae is developing a new half-hour comedy for HBO about two male friends in Las Vegas, one a barber and the other an aspiring boxer. The series will explore themes of ambition and loyalty, with Prentice Penney attached as director and showrunner. No cast has been announced yet.
The project marks Rae's return to HBO following the network's 2024 cancellation of her series Rap Sh!t after two seasons. She had since signed a three-year production deal with Paramount in January, though this comedy was reportedly already in development beforehand. The Las Vegas setting and boxing backdrop continue Rae's recurring interest in ambition and loyalty tested by external pressures, a theme she previously explored through Miami's rap scene.
Longtime collaborator Prentice Penney is attached to direct the pilot and serve as showrunner. No casting announcements have been made, but Rae has historically built ensembles from lesser-known actors. The series joins her active slate, which includes Spider-Verse voice work and producing projects with SZA, Keke Palmer, Anna Kendrick, and Seth Rogen.
This series could resonate with audiences drawn to stories about friendship under economic strain, particularly within sports and service-industry settings. By centering two Black men navigating ambition in Las Vegas, it may offer nuanced portrayals that counter stereotypical media depictions. The show could also reinforce HBO's investment in creator-driven half-hour comedies, potentially influencing what similar projects get greenlit.
