OpenAI expands ChatGPT scheduling to free users, adds third-party triggers
OpenAI has made its task scheduling feature available to free ChatGPT accounts, previously limited to paid tiers. Paid subscribers can now configure prompts to trigger based on events in Gmail, Slack, or GitHub. The feature also allows users to share scheduled tasks with others.
The scheduling hub, first introduced in June, was initially gated behind paid subscription tiers. That restriction has now been lifted, granting free-tier users access to the same sidebar menu for setting up recurring or future-dated prompts. This move broadens the tool's reach to a much larger user base.
For paying customers, the update introduces event-driven automation. Subscribers can now link their Gmail, Slack, or GitHub accounts so that specific prompts fire automatically when certain activities occur within those services. Additionally, a new sharing capability lets users duplicate and distribute their scheduled task configurations, enabling collaborative workflows where one person's automation setup can be adopted by others.
This expansion could significantly lower the barrier to everyday automation, potentially making AI a more proactive personal assistant for casual users. For professionals, event-driven triggers may streamline workflow management, reducing the need for manual status checks. However, increased reliance on such integrations could raise privacy considerations as more personal and
