Commodore 64 gets Cyberpunk 2077-themed 'Commodore 77' variant
Commodore and CD Projekt Red have collaborated on a limited-edition Commodore 64 styled after the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. The device includes a demo expanding the game's lore, custom packaging, and a themed cartridge. Pre-orders are available for $377, with no release date yet.
The Commodore 77 is a reimagined Commodore 64 Ultimate, a modern FPGA-based recreation that retains the original’s keyboard and adds HDMI, USB, and WiFi. Its weathered, graffiti-marked shell and custom boot screen evoke Night City, while the included demo—crafted by Polish group Arise with music by LukHash—offers a new lore expansion. Pre-orders cost $377, but no shipping date has been announced, leaving buyers in limbo.
This collaboration revives Commodore’s legacy through a niche, collector-focused product. The original C64’s boxy design has long been associated with retro-futurist aesthetics, making the cyberpunk theme a natural fit. The limited run, themed cartridge, and collectible packaging target nostalgia-driven fans willing to pay a premium for a functional piece of gaming history.
This crossover could appeal primarily to retro-computing enthusiasts and Cyberpunk 2077 fans, potentially driving renewed interest in Commodore’s revived brand. The high price and limited availability may create a collector’s market, but broader societal impact seems minimal—likely confined to niche communities. It may also signal a trend of nostalgic hardware collaborations, though such products rarely reach mainstream audiences.
