China leads creation of first global solid-state battery testing standards
The International Electrotechnical Commission has approved a Chinese-led proposal to develop the first international standard for automotive solid-state batteries. The framework, which includes input from experts in France, Japan and South Korea, will draw on China's domestic testing benchmarks. This move could allow Chinese manufacturers to export their products more easily and set global norms for the emerging technology.
The IEC's approval marks the first international testing framework specifically for automotive solid-state batteries, a technology still in early commercial stages. Current EVs predominantly rely on liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion cells, while solid-state versions offer improved stability and performance in extreme temperatures, making them viable for drones, humanoid robots, and electric aircraft.
China's domestic research benchmarks will form the foundation of the new standard, developed collaboratively with technical experts from France, Japan, and South Korea. The State Administration for Market Regulation announced the initiative last week, positioning standard-setting as a strategic tool amid intensifying global competition in advanced technologies.
This development could significantly reshape the global EV supply chain by lowering regulatory barriers for Chinese battery manufacturers seeking overseas markets.
