CTE May Affect at Least a Quarter of Recently Deceased NFL Players

A retrospective study estimated that at least one in four former NFL players who died from 2016 to 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The possible prevalence ranged from 24.5% to 97.7% among that group, and from 18.5% to 98.7% for those who died from 2008 to 2021. Severe stage IV CTE was associated with dementia symptoms.
