Sky Renews 'Under Salt Marsh' for Second Season, Moves Production to Scotland
Sky has commissioned a six-episode second season of the crime drama 'Under Salt Marsh,' with Rafe Spall returning as Detective Eric Bull. The new installment follows Bull to a remote Scottish mining village, where a murder case forces him to confront his own past. Filming is set to begin in Scotland in 2027, with the series available on Sky and Now in the U.K., Ireland, and Italy.
The second season marks a significant production shift for the series, relocating from Wales to Scotland after the first installment was shot in the Welsh countryside. The show's debut proved commercially strong for Sky, drawing 2.5 million viewers within 28 days and ranking as the platform's top original drama launch since The Day of the Jackal, while also becoming Sky's biggest entertainment title of the year to date.
Creator Claire Oakley returns alongside a writing team that includes In-Sook Chappell, Jonathan Harbottle, and Scott Graham, with Zoranna Piggott serving as series producer. Executive producers include Oakley, Elwen Rowlands of Little Door Productions, and Megan Spanjian for Sky. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution manages international sales, while the series will stream on Sky and Now across the U.K., Ireland, and Italy.
The renewal signals continued audience appetite for atmospheric, character-driven crime dramas with strong regional identities. By moving production to Scotland, the series may boost local film industry employment and tourism interest in remote locations, similar to effects seen with other UK crime productions. The storyline's focus on confronting personal history through professional duty could resonate with viewers seeking narratives about accountability and self-discovery, potentially reinforcing the genre's role in exploring psychological depth alongside procedural mystery.
