Ikea and Xbox Team Up for Nine-Piece Gaming Furniture Line
Ikea's new Yxstaby collection, revealed at Gamescom, stems from a 2024 meeting between the two companies' design teams in Milan. The range includes a wheeled side table that charges controllers, a toolbox with a laptop-stand lid, and a lounge chair with hidden storage. Xbox-inspired items feature a green D-pad cushion and a platter originally designed as a stool.
The Yxstaby range builds directly on Ikea's earlier Brännboll collection, which deliberately avoided typical gaming aesthetics like RGB lighting and aggressive angles. The new line instead borrows Xbox's visual language, integrating functional pieces like a charging side table and a console-ready TV stand into conventional living spaces. Designers leveraged existing Ikea products, notably the Nilserik office stool, as a structural foundation for the thumbstick seat.
The collaboration's origin traces to a coincidental meeting at Milan Design Week in 2024, where Ikea's team showcased Brännboll to Xbox's design leadership. Xbox provided original controller 3D files, enabling Ikea's David Wahl to scale the thumbstick into furniture. The D-pad platter evolved from a stool concept, reflecting the iterative, cross-company design process.
This collaboration could signal a broader shift in how gaming furniture is perceived, moving it from niche, tech-heavy setups toward mainstream home decor. By pairing Xbox's gaming credibility with Ikea's mass-market reach, the line may encourage more casual households to integrate gaming into shared living spaces. It could also influence future cross-industry design partnerships, where established brands merge expertise to create hybrid products that appeal beyond core enthusiasts.
