US calls for UN arms embargo on all of Sudan

The United States has urged the UN Security Council to extend the existing arms embargo on Sudan's Darfur region to the entire country, citing the risk of regional escalation. The current Darfur embargo, in place for over two decades, is due to expire on September 12 unless renewed. Russia has warned against new measures that could affect the Sudanese army.
