Ali Asgari's latest film, starring Misagh Zareh as a doctor disillusioned after arrest and losing his practice, has been picked up by buyers in France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Benelux, Bulgaria, Greece, and Brazil. The sales agency reports ongoing negotiations for the U.K., Germany, and Central Europe. The movie will premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival next month.
The film follows a physician whose professional life collapses after state arrest, leading him to spend a final day with family members before an intended suicide. It marks Asgari's second consecutive Venice appearance, following last year's Horizons section entry. Seven Springs Pictures leads production with six additional companies attached.
Salaud Morisset has secured buyers across eight territories, with negotiations ongoing for three more regions. Distributors in Switzerland and Brazil specifically cited the film's unflinching portrayal of authoritarian consequences and Asgari's established reputation, including his 2023 feature that Brazilian audiences have already encountered.
The film's international reception could signal continued appetite for Iranian cinema addressing state power and individual suffering, particularly as such stories face production constraints at home. Its Venice competition slot may amplify global attention on artistic expression from restricted environments, potentially influencing how distributors evaluate similar projects.
