Sporting KC Acquires Young Midfielder Wolff in Record U-22 Trade

Sporting Kansas City has finalized the acquisition of 21-year-old midfielder Owen Wolff from Austin FC, with Austin receiving $4.5 million upfront and up to $3.1 million in add-ons. Wolff, a U.S. youth international, recorded seven goals and seven assists in 34 league matches last season. The deal is the largest cash trade for a U-22 initiative player in MLS history.

The trade represents a significant investment in Kansas City's rebuilding project, which has already seen the club commit $18 million to Brazilian attacker Andre Luiz this week. Sporting KC freed a designated player slot by moving on from Manu Garcia and remains active in the market before the September 2 transfer deadline.

Wolff brings substantial experience for his age, having logged 147 first-team appearances and represented the United States at the 2023 U-20 World Cup. He signed a contract extension with Austin this winter but welcomed a fresh start. Austin, meanwhile, continues reshaping its roster under incoming sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad and head coach Jim Curtin, having already dealt Dani Pereira to Montréal for $2.1 million in general allocation money.
