United Airlines plans 10 new nonstop international routes in historic network growth
United Airlines will add nonstop service to 10 new international destinations next spring, including cities in Japan, France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. The airline says this is its largest international expansion in its nearly 100-year history. The new flights will depart from San Francisco, Dulles, and Newark, with the first to Okinawa on March 27 and the last to Portugal on June 9.
United's spring 2026 schedule will introduce service to ten destinations across Europe and Asia, with the first flight departing for Okinawa on March 27 and the final route to Portugal launching June 9. The carrier will operate these routes from its three primary international hubs: San Francisco, Washington Dulles, and Newark Liberty, with the majority departing from Newark.
The expansion coincides with the debut of United's new A321XLR aircraft, which will handle five of the new routes after flying domestic segments this fall. The airline also announced it will resume San Francisco-to-Tel Aviv service and add frequencies to existing international routes. This growth occurs despite jet fuel prices rising 82 percent year-over-year, though CEO Scott Kirby expressed cautious optimism about gradual price declines into 2027.
This expansion could reshape transatlantic and transpacific travel options for U.S. passengers, particularly those in the Northeast and West Coast, by offering direct access to secondary European cities and Okinawa that previously required connections. Increased competition may pressure other carriers to respond with their own route additions, potentially benefiting consumers through lower fares. However, the airline's growth strategy carries risk if fuel costs remain elevated, which could translate into higher ticket prices or reduced service elsewhere in its network.
