Grint Returns to Broadway as Ron Weasley in Harry Potter Sequel Play
Rupert Grint will reprise his role as Ron Weasley in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for 17 weeks starting February 2027. He follows Tom Felton, who is playing Draco Malfoy. Grint said stepping back into the role feels both familiar and new.
Grint, now 38, will perform in the New York production for 17 weeks beginning February 2027, following Tom Felton's current run as Draco Malfoy, which continues through January. The stage show has drawn over 14 million tickets globally since its 2016 London premiere, with the Broadway staging alone grossing more than $532 million. Grint previously appeared on Broadway in 2014's "It's Only a Play" and has continued acting in films including "Knock at the Cabin" and the upcoming "Ebenezer," where he plays Bob Cratchit opposite Johnny Depp. He has also publicly supported transgender rights, distancing himself from author J.K. Rowling's views, while HBO prepares to launch its Harry Potter television series this year.
This casting announcement may resonate beyond theater fans, potentially reinforcing Broadway's reliance on established intellectual property to draw audiences. The production could benefit from nostalgia-driven ticket sales, while also prompting renewed public conversation about the franchise's cultural legacy and the ongoing tensions between its creator's views and the actors' public stances. Younger audiences encountering the story through the upcoming HBO series may see this as a bridge between generations of fandom.
