Bluesky extends video limit to 10 minutes, boosts upload speed
Bluesky increased its video length limit from three minutes to ten, and raised the maximum file size to 300MB. Upload speeds are now two to three times faster. This brings Bluesky in line with TikTok's limit, while Threads allows only five minutes.
Bluesky's new 10-minute video ceiling marks a rapid escalation from the 60-second cap that existed before last year's three-minute expansion. The platform also raised file size allowances to 300MB and claims uploads now process two to three times faster, a combination that supports longer-form content without excessive wait times.
Because Bluesky runs on the decentralized AT Protocol, third-party apps like Bluescreen, Reelo, and Skylight inherit the same expanded limits automatically. The change places Bluesky level with TikTok's ten-minute allowance while surpassing Threads' five-minute cap. Notably, X free users remain restricted to 140-second clips, though paid subscribers can upload hours of footage. This update arrives as Bluesky's active user count reportedly fell 25 percent year-over-year as of July.
This expansion could shift how creators and casual users distribute video content, potentially drawing longer-form storytelling away from platforms with stricter caps. Journalists, educators, and small businesses may find the increased limit useful for tutorials or interviews without resorting to external hosting. However, longer videos also raise moderation challenges and could amplify misinformation spread, since extended clips are harder to review quickly. The timing, amid declining user numbers, suggests Bluesky may be competing aggressively for creator loyalty, which could reshape platform choice for audiences seeking alternatives to X and Threads.
