2026-27 Champions League League Phase Schedule and Draw Details Revealed
The 36-team field for the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League is set after qualifying concluded, with the league phase beginning September 8 and running through January 27. The draw on Thursday will assign each club eight opponents, with the knockout phase starting in February and the final scheduled for June 5. Defending champion Paris Saint-Germain headlines the first pot as it seeks a third consecutive title.
The league phase spans from September 8 to January 27, with eight matchdays spread across five months, including a winter break. The draw on Thursday will pair each club with two opponents from each of the four coefficient-based pots, while a new rule prevents any team from facing the same league-phase opponent in three consecutive seasons. Defending champion Paris Saint-Germain leads Pot 1, aiming for a third straight title—a feat last achieved by Real Madrid in 2018. Arsenal, unbeaten in last season's league phase, and Barcelona, fresh off a quarterfinal exit to Atlético Madrid, are among the early contenders.
The expanded 36-team format and extended schedule could intensify fan engagement across more markets, as clubs from smaller leagues gain additional high-profile fixtures. However, the added matches may strain player workloads and deepen squad rotation, potentially affecting domestic league competitiveness. The draw's randomness could also create uneven schedules, influencing which teams advance—shaping revenue distribution and the narrative of the season for millions of supporters worldwide.
