Philipps' tumour was discovered through a whole-body MRI she pursued in February after months of insisting something felt wrong, despite a doctor's initial reassurance that a scan was unnecessary. The 2.6cm mass was removed during a five-hour procedure in March, leaving her with more than 40 surgical staples. She later developed a staphylococcus infection in the incision, requiring additional debridement surgery shortly after beginning work on the legal drama Cupertino.
The diagnosis came days after the death of her Dawson's Creek co-star James Van Der Beek, who succumbed to bowel cancer in February at age 48. Philipps credited her ex-husband Marc Silverstein with encouraging her to keep the scan appointment, and noted that co-star Michelle Williams arranged meal deliveries during her recovery. She described the experience as the "weirdest six months" of her life.
