Warriors Coach to Sit Out Opener Following OWI Arrest
Waukee High School head football coach Gabe Bakker will not be on the sideline for Friday's season opener against Johnston after being charged with operating while intoxicated. His blood alcohol concentration was 0.23, nearly three times Iowa's legal limit, according to court documents. Assistant coach Matt Jeter will lead the team, while the district has not said how long Bakker will be away.
Bakker's arrest occurred just five days before the Warriors' scheduled opener against Johnston, leaving the program little time to adjust its coaching structure. The 0.23 blood alcohol reading is roughly three times Iowa's legal threshold of 0.08. Bakker reportedly drank at a Grimes establishment before being pulled over near his Waukee residence, and he voluntarily notified the school district of the incident.
The district has confirmed Bakker retains his head coaching title but has not specified how many games he will miss. Jeter brings substantial experience, having spent seven seasons as Simpson College's head coach before joining Waukee's staff in 2022. Bakker's Warriors finished 4-6 last season following an eight-win campaign in 2023.
This incident may affect the Waukee football program's stability during a critical stretch of the season, as players adjust to a different coaching voice on game day. It could also prompt broader conversations within the community about expectations for educators and coaches as role models, particularly regarding alcohol-related conduct. The district's handling of the situation may influence how similar personnel matters are addressed elsewhere, and Bakker's legal proceedings could shape public perception of accountability for school employees facing criminal charges.
