Petermann Glacier loses massive ice island after years of fracture growth

Satellite imagery captured a major calving event at Petermann Glacier on August 4, 2026, releasing a 76.4 square kilometer ice island up to 150 meters thick. Scientists had tracked growing fractures for years and expect two more large sections may detach, potentially removing about 22% of the remaining ice tongue.
