Chelsea agree fee for Atalanta defender Ahanor

Chelsea have reached a £40 million deal with Atalanta for 18-year-old defender Honest Ahanor, who is now set to undergo a medical. Ahanor made 35 appearances for Atalanta last season, including nine in the Champions League, and has earned two Italy caps this summer. He would become the second Atalanta player to join Chelsea this window after Marco Palestra.
Ahanor's rise has been rapid, having only left Genoa's academy in 2025 after six senior appearances there. At Atalanta, he became a regular contributor despite his age, featuring in 35 matches across all competitions and starting 15 Serie A fixtures as the club finished seventh. His nine Champions League appearances highlight his growing experience at the highest level.
The defender has already earned two Italy caps this summer, debuting as a late substitute against Luxembourg before starting at right-back in a friendly victory over Greece. At Chelsea, he joins fellow Atalanta arrival Marco Palestra, with the club also adding Maxence Lacroix and Pep Chavarria to their defensive options this window.
This transfer could signal a broader trend of elite clubs investing heavily in teenage defenders, betting on long-term development rather than immediate first-team readiness. Chelsea's willingness to pay £40 million for an 18-year-old may influence how other clubs value young defensive prospects across Europe. For Ahanor, the move could accelerate his international career, while Atalanta's ability to command significant fees for emerging talent may reinforce their reputation as a selling club that develops players efficiently.
