Gavin Rossdale and Adopted Dog Kaya Team With ASPCA to Promote Pet Adoption
Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale has joined the ASPCA's third annual Rescue Effect campaign, which encourages adopting or fostering shelter animals. The initiative provides $2 million in grants to support fee-waived adoption events at more than 450 shelters nationwide. Rossdale, who adopted his dog Kaya from a Los Angeles shelter, emphasizes the profound positive impact animals can have on people's lives.
The ASPCA's Rescue Effect campaign, now in its third year, runs from Aug. 1 through Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in October, distributing $2 million in grants to support fee-waived adoption events across more than 450 participating shelters and rescues nationwide. The organization notes that nearly 6 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters in 2025, with dogs often facing longer waits for adoption.
Rossdale's path to Kaya began when his son spotted the dog in a photograph and chose him from the East Valley Animal Shelter. The family had lost a previous pet roughly nine months earlier, making Rossdale initially hesitant. Kaya's background included being hit by a car, a dislocated shoulder, and damaged teeth, yet the dog's resilient demeanor won them over. Kaya now accompanies Rossdale on tour, with the musician planning travel around parks and open spaces for the dog.
This story could encourage more people to consider shelter adoption, particularly fans who may be influenced by Rossdale's celebrity platform. The campaign's fee-waived events may lower practical barriers for prospective pet owners, while the emphasis on fostering could expand temporary care options. The broader effect may be increased public awareness of shelter overcrowding and the emotional rewards of adoption, potentially easing strain on animal welfare organizations that face ongoing capacity challenges.
