US Envoy's Kashmir Remark Blurs Washington's Regional Stance

Ambassador Sergio Gor's recent characterization of Indian-administered Kashmir as an "important part of India" marks a departure from decades of US neutrality on the disputed territory. While he has advanced trade negotiations with India, his broader statements have created uncertainty about whether his positions reflect official White House policy. The episode underscores tensions between Gor's expansive role and Washington's traditional diplomatic caution in South Asia.

Gor holds a dual portfolio as both ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asia, a combination that grants him unusual latitude in the region. His appointment this January came amid efforts to repair bilateral ties after strained relations last summer, with free trade agreement negotiations emerging as a central priority of his tenure.

The Srinagar appearance, alongside Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, produced remarks that broke with longstanding diplomatic practice. Washington had previously avoided taking sides on Kashmir's status, even after India's 2019 constitutional changes eliminated the territory's semi-autonomous standing. Pakistan's foreign ministry has since responded with criticism, signaling potential strain in US-Pakistan relations.
