Google imposes new memory limits on Android apps due to AI-driven chip shortage
Google announced new performance thresholds for Android apps to reduce memory usage, responding to hardware supply constraints caused by AI data center demand. Developers must meet these requirements by February 2027, with tools to alert them when apps exceed limits. Additionally, by April 2027, apps must support automatic sign-in restoration during device migrations.
The new thresholds target dynamic memory usage and bitmap handling, with diagnostic tools arriving later this year, including a Memory Limiter feature that restricts how much device memory individual apps can consume. Google frames these changes as necessary for maintaining quality experiences on low-end devices, where memory availability is especially constrained.
The February 2027 deadline gives developers roughly two years to optimize their code. Separately, the April 2027 Zero Tap Sign-In requirement mandates that apps restore user sign-in states during device migrations through the Android Restore Credentials API, addressing friction when users switch phones.
This shift could reshape the Android app ecosystem, as smaller developers may struggle to meet optimization demands while larger companies with more engineering resources adapt more easily. Users on budget devices could benefit from smoother performance, but some apps may lose features or functionality as developers cut memory usage. The sign-in restoration requirement could reduce frustration during phone upgrades, though it may also raise privacy considerations about automatic credential transfers.
