Governor Josh Shapiro publicly criticized Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for spreading debunked misinformation about the MMR vaccine during a measles outbreak that has killed two in Pennsylvania. Shapiro said Kennedy's accusation that the vaccine contains fetal tissue is false and has been repeatedly refuted by scientists. The governor also noted that Kennedy called him to discuss federal support, but instead launched into a tirade of conspiracies.

While certain vaccine viruses are cultivated in cell lines originally derived from two aborted fetuses in the 1960s, those cell lines are self-sustaining and require no new fetal tissue. Purification processes remove all cellular material before final formulation, meaning no fetal tissue exists in the finished vaccine.
The current outbreak marks a dramatic reversal of public health progress. Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, but this year alone has seen 36 separate outbreaks and nearly 2,800 confirmed cases. The disease poses particular danger to young children, potentially causing permanent neurological damage, hearing and vision loss, and weakened immunity to other illnesses.
This clash may further polarize public trust in health institutions during an active outbreak. Families in affected communities could face difficult decisions about vaccination amid conflicting messages from federal and state officials.
