GTA 6 Brings Back San Andreas-Style Body Stats

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will feature San Andreas-style character stats, including weight, muscle, and strength. Eating will provide health buffs, while overeating can cause weight gain. Players can visit gyms together as Jason and Lucia to manage their stats.
The stat system tracks height, weight, sleep, nutrition, calories, shape, muscle, fat, and strength for both protagonists. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirmed that eating grants substantial health buffs, while overeating leads to visible weight gain. Gyms allow players to increase muscularity and strength levels, with a cooperative option where Jason and Lucia train together for efficient stat management.
This design echoes San Andreas' 2004 RPG-style attributes, which measured respect, stamina, muscle, fat, and sex appeal for protagonist CJ. Those mechanics were controversial at release and dropped for GTA 4 and 5, but resurfaced in Red Dead Redemption 2's simulation-driven approach. GTA 6 appears to continue that trajectory, suggesting Rockstar is doubling down on character-shaping systems that respond to player activity.
This stat system could deepen player investment in character progression, making routine activities like eating and exercise meaningful gameplay choices rather than background details. It may also encourage social play, as the cooperative gym mechanic gives partners a shared routine. However, the emphasis on body metrics could invite scrutiny regarding how games portray fitness and appearance, potentially reinforcing certain beauty standards among younger players who emulate in-game ideals.
