Dismissed military reporters file suit claiming free speech violations
Three former employees of the US military's independent news outlet Stars and Stripes have filed a federal lawsuit against the Pentagon, alleging their dismissals were unlawful and retaliatory. They claim they were fired after reporting on poor conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and for publicly defending editorial independence. The suit names Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as a defendant.
The lawsuit stems from a chain of events beginning with a July interview on CBS News, where two of the plaintiffs publicly defended Stars and Stripes’ editorial independence. Pentagon officials took no immediate action then, but the complaint alleges that a subsequent August report on the USS Abraham Lincoln—detailing food and water shortages, disrupted mail, and mental health strain among its 5,000 sailors—triggered the dismissals. The former publisher, who refused to carry out termination orders, chose retirement instead and was himself removed.
The case invokes the outlet’s Civil War-era legacy as a government-funded but editorially autonomous voice for service members. Plaintiffs argue their firings were retaliation for protected speech, not insubordination, and that the Pentagon’s actions threaten the publication’s core mission of unbiased reporting to military communities overseas.
