Twins call up top prospect Jenkins for White Sox series

The Minnesota Twins are promoting outfielder Walker Jenkins, their top prospect, ahead of Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox. Jenkins is expected to start in center field while Byron Buxton rests a sore hip. He has posted strong numbers at Triple-A, including a .308 average and 12 home runs.
Jenkins, the fifth overall pick in 2023, has battled a string of injuries—hamstring, ankle, and a recent AC joint sprain—that have capped his career high at 84 games in a season. His latest Triple-A stretch, however, shows a breakout: a .335/.413/.607 line with 10 homers in 44 games since returning in mid-June. The Twins’ decision comes as Buxton’s sore hip forces a rest, and Jenkins is slated for center field in Friday’s opener. He also carries a sentimental tie to the organization, as late scout Mike Radcliff’s glowing pre-death report helped secure his selection.
This promotion could shift fan expectations for the Twins’ immediate playoff push, as Jenkins’ arrival may energize a clubhouse and fanbase eager for a young star. His presence in center field while Buxton heals may also ease pressure on the veteran, but it could raise questions about long-term lineup roles. For a mid-market team, a top prospect’s debut often boosts ticket sales and local engagement, though his injury history means sustained impact remains uncertain.
