NATO officials warn of severe Patriot interceptor shortfall in Europe
US and NATO officials report a critical shortage of Patriot missile interceptors in Europe, largely due to the ongoing war with Iran depleting stocks. The US defence official said the military lacks enough Patriots to counter a sustained missile barrage.
The shortage stems from the ongoing US-Iran conflict, now approaching its sixth month, which has forced the redeployment of European-based interceptors to the Middle East. There, American and Gulf forces have expended substantial numbers of Patriots countering Iranian drone and missile barrages, some of which have inflicted American casualties. The depletion leaves NATO's European forces with only limited capability against even a single ballistic missile strike.
Officials assess Russia could be capable of attacking NATO members by 2030, though Patriot stockpiles are projected to recover by then. Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine may also constrain Moscow's ability to sustain an air campaign on two fronts simultaneously. CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly visited Moscow this week to deliver a warning against any attack, though President Trump declined to confirm the specifics of that message.
This shortfall could leave NATO member states feeling exposed during a period of heightened tension with Russia, potentially affecting public confidence in alliance defense guarantees. European governments may face pressure to accelerate domestic missile production or reconsider defense spending priorities.
