Squadron 42 Launch Slips to Spring 2027, Developer Blames GTA 6 Hype

Cloud Imperium Games CEO Chris Roberts announced that Squadron 42 will now launch in Q2 2027, moving from its previously targeted 2026 window. He explained that the game would be overshadowed by GTA 6's release this fall, so they chose to avoid that period. The single-player title has been in development for over a decade and features a star-studded cast.
The delay marks another setback for a project that began development in 2014, following years of shifting release targets. Cloud Imperium's funding has surpassed $1 billion, making it one of the most expensive games ever produced. The studio plans to host preview sessions with content creators and early backers in October, with a concrete release date expected shortly afterward.
The announcement follows a troubled livestream for Star Citizen where developers encountered the same bugs players had complained about, leading to visible tension among staff. The game features an extensive cast including Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, and Henry Cavill. Star Citizen itself still has no release window.
This delay could affect consumer confidence in crowdfunded game development, as Squadron 42's repeated postponements may reinforce skepticism about ambitious projects. Players who backed the game years ago may feel growing uncertainty about when—or if—it will arrive. The decision to avoid GTA 6's launch window could also shape industry release strategies, though it remains unclear whether this will ultimately benefit the game's reception or simply extend the wait for its audience.
