Satellite analysis links Himalayan flood catastrophe to bedrock and glacier collapse

Satellite imagery reviewed by geomorphologists revealed that a bedrock failure beneath a glacier on Langtang Lirung peak caused the glacier to break off, sending boulders and ice into the valley. The debris flow, mixed with melting ice, generated water and mud several stories high that swept through communities along the Nepal-China border. The event resulted in hundreds of deaths and many missing, with the collapse visible in clearer images taken after initial cloud cover obscured the scene.
